President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has highlighted that the greater welfare of the nation is the core of his administration’s development strategy.

He said this while taking the podium at the ceremony to inaugurate the new powerhouse and office building established in Magoodhoo island of Noonu atoll, on Wednesday.

The new powerhouse and office building was development by state-utilities company FENAKA Corporation Limited.

Shedding light on the lack of basic public services in most islands when he assumed office, the president stressed on his priority to develop and deliver basic services across the nation including power, water, and sewerage services as well as to healthcare and education.

With this being said, the president stated that the ongoing "Integrated National Public Ferry Network" project seeks to ensure easy access to public services closer to each island.

Going on to touch down on FENAKA’s efforts to improve electricity services across the country, President Solih stated that the government has made massive progress on this front.

As such, electricity generation capacity doubled from 70 to 140 megawatts with the installation of 213 new generator sets on some 133 islands under his leadership. Further, electricity cable networks have also been upgraded on some 112 islands and the president noted that new powerhouse development plans are being compiled for 14 islands.

Shedding light on efforts to boost the use of renewable energy, the president stated that while the renewable energy generation capacity was at 16 megawatts when his administration took office, it has now risen to 20 megawatts.

Before President Solih’s five-year term ends, the president aims to generate 52 megawatts of energy through renewable energy sources.

As part of the president’s recent visit to Magoodhoo island, the fourth destination of his two-day tour of Noonu atoll, the president also visited the health center on the island and met with management and staff, having inquired about the services there.

He also met with the faculty at Magoodhoo School.
