State Electric Company (STELCO) has cautioned that power outages might continue throughout the capital Malé City as they struggle to fix the issues to one of its cables.

Majority of Malé was left in darkness on Saturday night, as a power outage hit various areas in the city. STELCO had then said that the power outage was due to a technical problem in an engine.

Speaking at Sunday’s press conference, STELCO’s Managing Director Abdul Shakoor said that they have been testing the newly place eight megawatt generators, which resulted in the power outage in most of the city, in addition to an issue to a cable.

He said that due to the damage to a cable, the generators had turned off.

Shakoor revealed that they have yet to find a permanent solution, noting that “the issue has not been solved entirely, might have to cut electricity in some areas”.

He said that a permanent solution can only be found after the damages cable is fixed.

Power went out at around 2 am on Saturday, and resumed at around 4:45 am. There was a public outrage following the power cut, as most of Malé City was preparing for Suhoor, for day to of Ramadan.
