Speaker and President Mohamed Nasheed is ready to give a statement to help with the investigation in regards to the assassination attempt that targeted his life.
Nasheed’s lawyer, Ahmed Nazim Abdul Sattar stated that President Nasheed is now ready to make a statement and that he wishes that his statement is taken before the preliminary trial of those accused concludes. Nazim also affirmed that the Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem has also been notified about Nasheed wanting to make a statement.
Both the Maldives Police Service and PG Shameem have previously stated that it is very important that the former President makes a statement.
Nasheed appointed Nazim as his lawyer on August 5.
On Wednesday, the remand of Is’haq and Fahmy Ali, who was arrested for being involved in the terrorist attack aimed at former President Nasheed, was extended by a period of 14 days.
They were both brought to the Criminal Court on Tuesday, under the Maldives Procedure Act which states that a remand review must be held every 30 days for those locked up who are yet to receive a sentence.
According to the Police, Ishaq, Ali Haisham and Mohamed Thasleem are suspected to be the leaders behind the attack.
The Police also revealed that the felons made a total of three attempts to kill the former President. The first attempt was to take place near the Yaagoothuge region, the second near Marry Brown and the third was the almost successful, May 6th terrorist attack.
A total of four suspects have been sentenced since their arrest in relation to the attack – Ahmed Adhuham, Mujaz Ahmed, Thahmeen Ahmed and Ali Haisham.
