Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid is scheduled to visit Japan this week, in his as the President-elect of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The foreign ministry said that the minister will conduct an official visit to Japan from 26-28 August, on the invitation of the Japanese government.

Minister Shahid will call on Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide during the visit, as well as meet his Japanese counterpart Motegi Toshimitsu.

The ministry said that will provide an opportunity for both the minister, in his capacity as the President-elect, and the Japanese government to hold close consultations on enhancing cooperation within the UNGA.

The visit will also focus on bilateral aspects of the relationship between Maldives and Japan.

The foreign minister will travel to Japan from London, where is he currently at. There, he met with the President-designate of the UN Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, Alok Sharma, last week.

Shahid, who was elected as the UNGA president in June, will take office next month.
