The governments of Maldives and neighboring India have begun efforts to finalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) and the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
IUM revealed that they will be able to implement the MoU with AMU within two to three months.
According to the university, the proposed agreement will be a framework for collaboration between IUM and AMU to cover exchange of students, exchange of teaching as well as research staff.
Further, the scope of the MoU also includes the establishment of short-term training and internship programmes and those that will enable qualified students and university personnel to follow short-term or extended programmes of study in both institutions. It also facilitates visits by authorized officials from each university.
Currently, AMU is a public university with nearly 40,000 students and 1,700 teachers, since it’s inception in 1875 by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan who was once of the architects of modern India. The university first went by the name “Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College”.
With 13 faculties including arts, technology, medicine, management, commerce, agriculture, life sciences, law, theology, international studies and more, the university maintains seven high schools and two secondary schools as well.
Recently, the Centre for University World Rankings ranked AMU eighth among the top Indian universities.
The university is currently working to finalize the context of the MoU with IUM, revolving around the key areas of partnership sought by the Maldives university.
