The permission granted to use a restricted area of Hulhumalé for the Racing and Drift Association has been revoked.

This was announced by Fazul Rasheed, Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).

As such, taking to social media platform ‘X’, Fazul revealed that the permission granted for the Racing and Drift Association to use a specific area in Hulhumalé on 19 October 2023, has been revoked and that the association has been notified of this decision.

Fazul’s announcement comes following the instruction given on Friday evening, to immediately revoke the permission granted on 19 October 2023, to use a specific area in Hulhumalé for racing and drifting.

During the presidential election, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that drifting is currently a rapidly growing activity.

Muizzu noted that drifting, like racing, is a popular activity among young people, and emphasized that what is needed is more space.

The president said they would first start in the Greater Malé Area, because it has not expanded that much, “yet”.

Back then, the president assured youth that his administration would establish a designated stadium for drifting.

The president has instructed relevant authorities to implement eight stringent measures to control vehicles driving at high speeds illegally, control the use of vehicles that have been modified or are naturally loud when driven, and to protect residential areas where the public resides.

Muizzu highlighted in his post that the decisions made to implement measures for institutions were aimed at controlling excessively speeding vehicles illegally and preventing the recurrence of dangerous accidents on the roads.

Further, the president noted that these measures aim to prevent the creation of public nuisance by vehicles that produce loud noises, either through modifications or by their inherent design, and to protect residential areas where the general public lives.
