Ibrahim Zaid Habeeb, a suspect involved in the 100-kilogram drug case, has been arrested in connection with a case of drug peddling.

All but two foreigners initially arrested in connection with the case, have been released from custody.

Zaid was arrested under accusations of possessing, consuming and peddling drugs.

The Criminal Court has since remanded Zaid by five days behind bars.

According to the court order, his remand period was shortened as he had requested to be appointed a legal representative.

The last hearing in connection with the 100kg drug case was held on 28 August 2023.

That day, the court clarified the proceedings of the case as the judge presiding over the case changed.

At the time, the trial was at the stage of pre-trial submissions and defence witnesses.

For that, the new presiding judge granted 10 days to do the needful.

Since then, a hearing has not been held in connection with the case.

If the suspects are found guilty of trafficking diamorphine, they will face life imprisonment and a fine ranging from MVR 100,000 to MVR 10 million.

Further, if the accused is not guilty of this crime and instead is found guilty of being involved in the offence to any extent or to have attempted to be involved in committing the offence, they will be slapped with a prison sentence of 18 years and a fine ranging from MVR 75,000 to MVR 7,500,000.
