President Abdulla Yameen will soon face prosecution for his ‘unjust imprisonment’ of political rivals, said the opposition's shadow cabinet minister Abdulla Ameen.

Ameen, who had previously served as a minister at the President’s Office, said at a rally on Tuesday night that it is unconstitutional to inhumanely detain an individual – citing article 54 which states that no person shall be subject to cruel treatment or torture.

In reference to the current charges against Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim, Ameen said that those involved in every level are guilty of said constitutional violation.

He further said that the results of the Local Council Elections, which was held on Saturday and showed opposition Maldivian Democratic Party to be leading in all major island, atoll, and city councils, shows the people’s vision for the country.

Ameen is the Defence Minister at the Maldives United Opposition’s shadow cabinet.
