President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the ninth amendment to the Decentralization Act on Wednesday.

The legislation was passed by the People’s Majlis during its 27th sitting of the year’s last session, held on December 6.

The amended Decentralization Act has been publicized in the government gazette, upon ratification.

The newly amended act mandates the Attorney General to identify any laws in contradiction to the stipulations specified in the Decentralization Act.

As such, the Attorney General is mandated to submit amendments to the specified list of laws to the People’s Majlis, within six months after the act is ratified.

In addition, the amendment enlightens the decrees under which councils may create and implement policies and regulations while directing constituents.

Further, the amendment highlights the information that councils must include in its land-use plans and sanctions the Ministry of Finance to establish guidelines for councils, in order to utilize their finances.

The ninth amendment to the Decentralization Act also contains changes to different sections of the act, which voids the replaced and rendering sections.
