Improvements to rehabilitation services provided to detained victims of narcotics abuse have been proposed by the government.

During extensive discussions with relevant authorities on Thursday, Vice President Faisal Naseem proposed solutions that would improve rehabilitation services provided to those detained, who have been victims of substance abuse.

The discussions were held with the aim to explore means through which the major challenges facing the current system could be addressed.

During the meeting, VP Naseem stressed on the importance of rehabilitating victims of narcotics abuse and reintegrating them into the society as responsible members, especially those among the youth community.

Further, the vice president shed light on several issues within the system and proposed solutions that would enable victims of narcotics abuse that have been detained, to be rehabilitated and reintegrated back into the society, swiftly.

Highlighting issues raised in connection to the temporary “Drug Offenders Remand Center” located in Gulhifalhu, the vice president urged the relevant authorities to speed up services and improve the efficiency of treatment.

VP Naseem inquired on the progress of the center, placed in the state budget for 2021, and emphasized that the center would provide social integration and aftercare services in addition to rehabilitation upon coming into operation.

In addition, the vice president noted that the center will provide comprehensive rehabilitation and reintegration services to make the victims, productive individuals that return to the society.

Some of the incumbent administration’s planned reintegration programs include offering employment and training opportunities from select state organizations to support patients to return to a “dignified life”.

Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdulla, Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services, Aishath Mohamed Didi, Undersecretary at the President's Office, Dr. Abdul Malik and the Chairman of the National Drug Agency Board, Hassan Hameed were in attendance at the meeting as well as senior officers from the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and the gender ministry.
