Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) has officially resumed work with the election of an executive committee on Saturday.

After years remaining inactive, MJA earlier this month announced plans to restart work including forming a new members registry and election on an executive committee.

As such, its first Extraordinary General Meeting in years was held on Saturday, with new members in attendance, and a six member executive-committee was elected.

The meeting was held virtually and voting was carried out via messaging platform, Telegram.

Mohamed Hamdhoon was elected MJA president with Ali Rifshan as his vice. In addition, Ahmed Naif and Nazim Hassan are the new general secretary and budget secretary, respectively, while Mohamed Junaid Saleem and Fathmath Saya Ahmed were elected executive committee members.

The Extraordinary General Meeting and all work related to the internal election was origanized by a three-member transitional committee comprising of Zaheena Rasheed, Hussain Hassan and Mohamed Muzayyin Nazim.

Maldives Journalist Association, who had been a voice against attacks on journalists while it was active, says that it hopes to continue doing so with this new chapter.

The association, formed in 2009, had also helped facilitated various training opportunities for the development of journalism in the country.
