The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has kicked off harbor development projects in two islands.

In a Twitter post on Sunday, the company revealed that excavation work for the harbor upgrading in Hanimaadhoo island of Haa Dhaal atoll began on June 1, after the project received Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) approval in early May 2020.

Under the scheme of the project, 53,523 cubic meters of sand will be dredged and excavated from the lagoon and a 355-meter breakwater will also be constructed alongside a 50-meter revetment, a 90-meter groyne, and a 270-meter quay wall.

Further, it includes the installation of lights and a paved area measuring 1,015 square meters

According to MTCC, the project is worth MVR 57.1 million and is targeted to be completed within the span of 10 months.

The company stated that it aims to “overcome logistical challenges associated with internal and external Covid-19 precautions in completing the project”.

In addition MTCC on Saturday commenced work to design and build the harbor in Dharanboodhoo island of Faafu atoll.

Mobilized on May 27, the project is worth MVR 38.2 million and is targeted to be completed within the span of 397 days.

The scope of the harbor upgrade project includes a detailed design of the harbor and detail surveys including bathymetry of basin and channel and bathymetry of potential harbor expansion area.

Contracted to the company during December 2019, the purpose of the project is to upgrade the island’s harbor for “easy and safe” access and for additional berthing space for large number of vessels.
