A white alert has been issued over some regions of the country where squally weather conditions are expected to prevail.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) issued the alert over the regions between Thaa atoll and southernmost Addu City.

The alert is in effect from 12:30pm to 04:30pm on Sunday and torrential rain with thunderstorms are expected over the regions, along with average strong winds of 19 – 24 miles per hour and winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour.

Further the department has predicted seas to be generally rough throughout the country.

Generally, scattered rain showers with squally showers and thunderstorms are expected over the entire country and showers are expected to be heavy at times.

Winds are expected to gust west to northwesterly at 15 – 25 miles per hour and may increase between 50 – 60 miles per hour during squally showers.

The department urged individuals to be cautious of the adverse weather conditions and strong monsoon activities as swell wave surges have also been predicted during high tide times.

A number of such alerts have been issued across several regions over the course of the past few days, and an orange alert was issued for the first time in the country, on Friday.

Addu City has been experiencing the worst flooding caused by rain showers yet, and are suffering from damage, bigger than ever before.

With the Maldives currently experiencing the southwest monsoon, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) urged the citizens to practice caution, especially with the wide-spreading Covid-19 virus across the country. Further, citizens have been urged to practice caution against influenza and dengue as well.
