Majlis to begin debate on delaying council elections, next week

ECM filed a case at the High Court, seeking to postpone the elections, earlier

Earlier, it was delayed by two weeks, to 18 April

The elections were initially slated for 4 April

The People’s Majlis is to begin debating on the bill forwarded by the state to delay the Local Council Elections and the Women’s Development Committee Elections, next week.

This was revealed by the Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed during a press conference on Thursday, where he revealed that the government proposed bill has been submitted to parliament.

He added that the Counsellor General recommends that work on the bill start soon.

With this being said, that parliament plans to carry out work on the bill, as soon as possible.

The parliament currently has two recommendations for the elections, one of them is proceeding with the elections through doctor recommendations. However, Nasheed stressed that this will not be the most efficient way as there is currently no time for candidates to campaign.

The second way is to delay the elections, indefinitely as this is what the government and parliamentarians wish as well.

While the elections were scheduled for 4 April initially, it was postponed by two weeks to 18 April after the virus reached the Maldives.
