COVID-19: gov't will not lie and is fully prepared for a possible outbreak

The MP added that it poses more concern that the people are in continuous worry over the matter

The government does not wish to fib about “this big of a disease”

An emergency motion was submitted over the possible spread of the fatal disease in the country on Wednesday

MP for north-Galolhu constituency and Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Eva Abdulla has assured the public that the government will not hide or fib if a case of the wide-spreading Novel Coronavirus surfaces in the country.

MP Eva stated this during deliberations on the emergency motion that was submitted over the possible spread of the fatal disease in the country.

She stated that the government does not wish to fib about “this big of a disease”, adding that the government does not believe it can get away with lying about something that is connected to the people as well as the government.

I can positively say that the government will not lie about a matter related to the virus, even if there are reports that there is a case in Maldives. Information on everyone who has been quarantined til today has also been shared, as well as the results of any tests being conducted. There is no doubt that the government will not attempt to hide a case, if it surfaces”.

The north-Galolhu MP revealed that the people may be in fear that the government will deceive the public and lie about such a disease owing to the fact that the previous government had done so in the past five years.

Eva stressed that the people had come to her, expressing concern that the government is hiding a positive case of the COVID-19, in the past two days.

Further, she highlighted that the people’s safety will be ensured as preventive measures are implemented. The government, Eva said, is fully prepared to implement every single measure to prevent the disease from spreading in the country.

The MP added that it poses more concern that the people are in continuous worry over the matter, and that rumors that can churn public anxiety must not be spread.

This comes at a time authorities are noticeably reinforcing efforts to curb an outbreak, even having halted flights from China, South Korea and Iran as well as cruise liners. More efforts underway include the joint cooperation between the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to implement safeguards for the entire nation.
