Jailed Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has been summoned for police questioning for additional cases currently under investigation.
Former Vice President and Head of Yameen's legal team, Mohamed Jameel Ahmed took to Twitter on Wednesday, revealing that the jailed former president has been summoned for police questioning in regard to additional cases currently under investigation. However, Jameel did not disclose further details about the cases being investigated.
According to Jameel, the summons was issued during the former President's ongoing appeal trial because Yameen's conviction is proved to be politically motivated and has no legal basis. Jameel further alleged that President Solih is taking his frustrations out on former President Yameen because President Solih has failed to fulfil his pledges within the past year.
He further added that all of it will come to an end soon.
Yameen has previously requested to be released on bail until the end of his appeal trial. However, the presiding judges denied the request during Monday’s hearing.
The former President is currently serving his five-year sentence at Maafushi Prison after being convicted of money-laundering charges. He was convicted on 28 November for misappropriating US dollars through the state-owned MMPRC via a private company SoF, during his presidency. He was also fined USD five million to be paid within in six months.
