Speaker of Parliament and Former President, Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the family of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom should refrain from "antagonising" his children.
On Saturday, Former Foreign Minister and daughter of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom Dunya Maumoon took to twitter claiming that each new president arrests the previous leader "using political influence on the judiciary", in reference to the imprisonment of her uncle and former President, Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
When members of the public highlighted that such actions were not seen during former President Nasheed's tenure, Dunya retorted by stating that Nasheed tormented her father with a commission and "dragged" him to the police station.
Nasheed's daughter also defended him, questioning whether torture and a summons for a police interview are comparable.
As such, Nasheed responded to Dunya by highlighting the irony of President Gayoom‘s family complaining about "ill-treatment" as Maumoon's regime famously tortured an entire generation of Maldivians - even keeping a "torture logbook" and meticulously recording their cruelty.
Nasheed further stated that the former president's family should "keep quiet and not antagonise my children"
