The 19th Parliament Committee on Human Rights and Gender has held an emergency meeting due to two serious child abuse cases that recently surfaced.

During Wednesday's emergency meeting, members inquired into the child abuse case against "Honorary Disability Ambassador" Ahmed Hishan and the case of a child being abused by their mother.

An emergency motion in regard to these cases was presented to parliament on Wednesday to investigate negligence on behalf of the Ministry of Gender, after it was revealed that the ministry was aware of the serious child abuse allegations against Hishan when he was awarded him ambassador status.

The family court ruled against granting guardianship of a 19 year-old special needs child to Hishan in 2018. Nevertheless, despite the court ruling, it has been revealed that the special needs youth has been living with Hishan since then. Thus, the motion claims that the case is a clear example of the ministry's negligence.

Additionally, the committee discussed the case of a child from an island of the southern province being abused by their mother. The members determined to collect all available information regarding the case from the gender ministry and other relevant authorities as well as inquire about the child's current status and condition from the island's council and police.

As such, the members unanimously agreed to request for a written response from the relevant authorities by Thursday and further stated that, if required, the relevant parties will be summoned for questioning as well.
