Maldives Ambassador to New Zealand, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has officially presented his Letter of Credence to Governor-General & Commander-in-Chief of New Zealand, Dame Patricia Lee Reddy.

The ceremony was held at the Government House Wellington and Ambassador Mausoom also inspected the Guard of Honor, signed the visitor’s book and delivered a statement alongside Governor-General Reddy.

During his statement, the ambassador shed light on the outstanding bilateral relations that Maldives and New Zealand have enjoyed over the years alongside common interests such as both countries’ commitment to uphold democratic values, human rights and sustainable development.

Mausoom recapped Maldives firm support for the Christchurch Call of Action in combating terrorism and extremism.

After Mausoom presented his credentials, Reddy highlighted that this is the very first time a Head of Mission from the Maldives has presented credentials in New Zealand. She went on to add that this provides a good opportunity to reaffirm the warmth both countries share in the bilateral and multilateral relationships, and to consider how to "build upon the shared history".

Further, Reddy reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to support the process of Maldives rejoining the Commonwealth of Nations, going on to state New Zealand’s commitment to provide support for small island developing states, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

The pair also expressed commitment to further enhance the already existing friendly ties between both countries during the ambassador’s tenure.

An official reception was also hosted by the Governor-General in honor of Ambassador Mausoom.

Mausoom was accompanied by his spouse, Zeenaz Fahmee and Second Secretary at the Maldives Embassy in Singapore Aminath Guraisha during the ceremony.

The ceremony was also joined by New Zealand Government Representative, Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety, Minister of Immigration, the Deputy Leader of the House Hon Iain Lees-Galloway, and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
