The Ministry of Home Affairs will proceed with work to implement the recommendations to the prisons audit in cooperation with the newly appointed Commissioner of Prisons, Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu, says Home Minister Imran Abdulla.

Taking to Twitter following the news, Minister Imran wrote that the work will be carried out in cooperation with the new Commissioner of Prisons who is sure to help the government fulfill its pledges to reform the countries’ prison facilities.

Further, the new Commissioner of Prisons expressed his commitment to “give his best” to the important work of prison reformation and strengthening the organizational capacity of the Maldives Correctional Service, via a Tweet early Wednesday.

Following Abdulla Munaz’s dismissal on Tuesday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appointed Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu as the new Commissioner of Prisons.

Mohamed served as the Inspector of Correctional Service at the Ministry of Home Affairs prior to his appointment on Tuesday. He holds a Masters degree in Social Policy and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations from the Maldives National University (MNU).

The President’s Office declared that the move was made as part of the government’s efforts to reform the correctional services and the country’s prison system. The appointment was made under article 18 of the Maldives Prisons and Parole Act at the level of Deputy Minister.

RaajjeMV understands that Munaz was sacked at a time he has been drawing criticism for riots inside prison facilities, supposedly linked to his ineptitude. Several more complaints have risen against Munaz including difficulties in obtaining valid information regarding corrections facilities.
