PG asks to investigate additional case involving one of the suspects in toddler's sexual abuse

MP Jeehaan revealed this during an emergency committee meeting held on Friday

Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has requested the police to investigation an additional child sexual abuse case against an 82-year-old man accused of abusing his great granddaughter.

Chair of the parliament’s committee on human rights’ and gender, Hinnavaru constituency MP Jeehaan Mahmood revealed this during an emergency committee meeting held on Friday.

Shameem is seeking an investigation into a video circulating on social media, where a man that is believed to be the 82-yo man is heard asking a child to go to a room with apparent sexual intentions. The child is seen running away from the man.

The man’s face is not seen in the video.

The two-year-old’s sexual abuse case emerged late Thursday night; her father, grand father and great grandfather are implicated and were arrested on Friday.

Police said that the case was reported on Wednesday, after the father refused to hand her over to the girl’s maternal aunt after she expressed concern over her safety in such an environment.

While doctors in the island have confirmed signs of abuse, the toddler has been brought to the capital for further tests.

The issue has sparked a public outrage and protests, as well as calls for the resignation of the gender minister.
