Appointing members to the Presidential inquiry commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances, is at the “consideration stage”, revealed the President’s Office.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Spokesperson at the President’s Office, Ibrahim Hood revealed that deliberations are currently underway to fast-track appointing members to the commission.
Former head of the inquiry commission, Husnu Al Suood had resigned as the commission’s head following his appointment as a Supreme Court justice in accordance with Article 148 of the Maldives Constitution.
Further, a member of the commission, Adam Ibrahim also resigned from his position on 8 December, leaving three members remaining.
The Commission on Deaths and Disappearances currently has three members; Misbah Abbas, Fareesha Abdulla, and Ahmed Nashid.
Divulging the commission’s latest information to the public, member Fareesha revealed that they hope to release a report of the major cases of enforced disappearances and unexplained deaths by the end of 2019.
Formed in line with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s electoral pledge to seek out the truth behind unexplained murders and unresolved disappearances due to a lack of proper investigation in the past, the Commission on Deaths and Disappearances is tasked with investigating the over almost-20 deaths and disappearances of several individuals. It was formed on President Solih’s first day in office and has since completed investigations into the murder of slain Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrasheem and Minivan News Journalist Ahmed Rilwan’s abduction and consecutive murder.
