AG welcomes PG's decision to review prolonged remand cases
 
Ensuring timely review of remand cases implements “vital” aspects of the Prosecution Directive
 
The release of those accused of serious crimes will not be requested

Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath has welcomed the Prosecutor General’s Office’s decision to review the prolonged remand cases.

While the office revealed its decision to include such cases, all 256 of it via Twitter, AG Riffath took to Twitter shortly afterward, writing that ensuring timely review of remand cases implements “vital” aspects of the Prosecution Directive and as such, encourages rights to be freed from unjust incarceration.

PG’s office formed a special review committee, that is authorized to include such cases in their mandate. The committee is tasked with seeking to expedite the cases and give a timeline in accordance with section 116 of the procedures code, from courts.

Hussain Shameem, appointed as Prosecutor General on 8 December, went on to reveal that the committee will not request to release those accused for serious crimes.

The office further revealed that those who wish to submit complaints may do so at their front desk, where the forms have been made available, forms are also available through their bureaus in outlying atolls, prison facilities, the office website, Maldives Police Service (MPS), police stations as well as the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS).
