The Commission of Murders and Enforced Disappearances is having difficulties in obtaining some information in the investigation into Dr. Afrasheem Ali’s murder, RaajjeMV has learnt.

RaajjeMV understands that this is the reason for the delay is disclosing the commission’s findings in the case.

The Ungoofaaru constituency lawmaker was stabbed to death in the stairwell of his house in the capital city, in October 2012. Two were charged over his murder, and Hussain Humaam was convicted and sentenced to death after a dubious trial.

Speaking to RaajjeMV on the delay in disclosing details, commission chair Husnu Suood -who on October 2 said that the details of the horrific crime will be revealed “within weeks”- told RaajjeMV that the details will be shared “very soon”.

He also stressed that the commission has completed investigations into most of the cases, and that they are currently finalizing everything including “expanding evidence.”

Suood added that details of all cases will be shared with the public soon.

However, he said that “it is unclear” when the commission’s final report will be released.

RaajjeMV understands that the commission has been facing difficulties in obtaining some of the required documents from other institutions.

The Commission of Murders and Enforced Disappearances was formed on incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s first day in office, last November.

In addition to Dr. Afrasheem’s case, the commission is investigating 24 other murders and disappearances including the murders of journalist Ahmed Rilwan and blogger Yameen Rasheed.

It was the commission that confirmed Rilwan’s murder back in September, after years since his disappearance in August 2014. While it revealed that he was killed by religious extremists, its findings showed that there are connections in these three cases.

Suood in December 2018 said that there were patterns and similarities between the three cases, leading the commission to believe they were linked.
