International Day of Democracy is celebrated globally on 15 September

The government will remain resilient in its commitment to promote democracy, promote human rights and fundamental freedoms as well as strengthening the rule of law, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

In a message to the people in commemoration of the International Day of Democracy, Solih stated that his administration will ensure and protect the rights enshrined in the constitution.

Stressing that the most significant rights are the right to live, rights of freedom and personal security, labor, as well as the right to equality before the law and the right to a fair trial.

Further, Solih said that strengthening democracy will ensure prosperity for the people and bring about a realization of human potential in every community when their faith, culture and traditions are supported.

The President went on to urge the citizens to put in their best in the work to strengthen democratic institutions and encourage greater participation to seek a permanent solution differences that surface, through dialogue and debate.

While this year’s theme revolves around “participation”, Solih highlighted that the past few years have demonstrated the virtues of participation, adding that the “democracy” itself denotes a government reigned by the people.

Recalling how the stability of the nation had been shaken because of human rights violations over the past few years, Solih shed light on the change that has been brought about since the people began practicing the right to meaningful participation.

In addition, Solih stressed that the foundation that builds democracy is on inclusion, participation and equality. He went on to highlight that democracy is the basis for sustainable development, human rights and overall peace.

The International Day of Democracy is celebrated globally on 15 September each year.
