Old Friday Mosque has been temporarily closed for renovations.

Ministry of Heritage stated that the mosque was closed before Friday prayers due to public safety issues.

Some parts of the Old Friday Mosque have been closed for some time.

The Ministry of Heritage has also stated that it is preparing to do major renovations to the mosque, with India’s aid. An advance team from India arrived in Maldives on September 1 for the project.

The Old Friday Mosque or Hukuru Miskiy is over 300 years old, making it one of the oldest and largest coral stone mosques in Maldives. The mosque is also on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage cultural list.
