President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has discussed development plans for Miladhoo island, Noonu atoll, with the island council and senior institutional representatives.

During a meeting that took place on Thursday at the Secretariat of the Miladhoo Council, Solih stressed on the importance of such meetings in order to fully understand the needs of island communities and connect with them in order to provide development through inclusive discourse.

The meeting saw discussions on development plans for the future welfare of the island and talks that will help councilors fully understands opportunities that amendments to the Decentralization Act will provide.

Solih was also briefed on several concerns and pressing issues such as an underdeveloped harbor, difficulties arising due to lacking space at the island school and council, soil erosion as well as flooding and waste management.

While the island is prone to flooding during the monsoon season and torrential rains overall, the council requested for a solution for this, among many others.

Further, the councilors offered recommendations and opinions as well as requests from the island community for future development projects the government has planned out for the island.

Having listened to their concerns, Solih assured them that said issues will discussed with the relevant ministries in order to provide an efficient solution.

He went on to request the council for a prioritized list of the most important needs of the island community and shared updates of projects planned for the island, within the scope of this year’s budget.
