Parliament has passed the motion to impeach Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi.
The motion was passed with 72 votes favor and one abstention at Wednesday’s sitting.
Judicial Service Commission (JSC) completed its investigation and sent the request to impeach Justice Didi on Tuesday, and parliament’s judiciary committee approved JSC’s request and sent its report to the floor.
JSC’s report states that Justice Didi is guilty of:
- Accepting money from people involved in the MMPRC embezzlement scandal,
- Using his position to gain undue influence.
- Using his influence to secure a government job for his wife.
- Recommending a member to the Anti-Corruption Commission to “Suspect 1” via phone.
- Negotiating with a criminal on the release of a suspect in the case of missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan.
- Accepting bribes to issue specific sentences to politicians.
- Violating judicial disciplinary regulation.
Didi has been in Malaysia since leaving Maldives after the last JSC’s investigative meeting, which was held in public.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed submitted the case to JSC, accusing him of accepting a one-million-US dollar bribe in 2015 to sentence former President Mohamed Nasheed to 13 years in prison.
Didi has submitted a case to the Supreme Court after being suspended. At the first hearing, his attorney said that JSC had approved its member and parliament speaker Nasheed’s request to suspend Didi for personal gain and that Nasheed had submitted his case out of spite, because Didi had sentenced him.
