RaajjeMV has learnt that Meedhoo MP Ahmed ‘Sun’ Siyam had transferred USD one million to former President Abdulla Yameen’s dollar account at the Maldives Islamic Bank.

Private company SoF’s account was used to transfer laundered money from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) to other bank accounts, including to the former President’s dollar account.

Six days after Yameen had opened the dollar account, SoF had made two transfers, which totaled one million dollars. In order to profit further, Yameen transferred the money to a newly-opened general investment account.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has stated that, after SoF, two other accounts transferred one million dollars to Yameen’s account and that his dollar account had over three million dollars.

RaajjeMV understands one of the individuals who transferred a million dollars to Yameen’s account is Siyam, a close associate of the former president. Siyam’s Maldives Development Alliance was in a coalition with Yameen’s Progressive Party of Maldives during the previous administration. It is yet unclear why Siyam transferred the money.

At a court hearing, Yameen claimed that there were millions of dollars in his account even before SoF transferred the money. However, ACC stated that, before SoF transferred the one million, his account only contained the USD 250 required to open the account.

The state has accused Yameen of transferring SoF’s one million dollars to his general investment account to conceal its origin and to profit off of it.
