While reverting to a single-session school policy is a campaign pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Education Minister Aishath Ali has revealed this this will come into effect next year.
The minister said this at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Thursday, where the ministry shared updates of its latest projects.
As such, Minister Aishath said that a total of 154 schools across the country have been shifted to single sessions.
Further noting that all schools will be reversed to single sessions in 2020, the minister said that they have to ensure that the education standards are up to par.
As such, the minister noted that they are currently conducting pilot programmes at 22 schools, and added that they have been seeing “improvement” in these schools.
She said that they were unable to launch the project across the country due to budgetary restrictions and other such issue.
Furthermore, Minister Aishath added that “inclusive education training programmes” are being held for those in special education services. Noting that they are working to find therapists to conduct the programme, the minister said that mobile teams will travel to different parts of the country.
Also speaking at Thursday’s press conference, State Minister Ahmed Riyaz said that there are plans to develop two more schools in the capital; Dharumavantha School and one in phase 2 of the capital’s suburban district.
