Minister of National Planning and Infrastructure, Mohamed Aslam has revealed that the ministry is working to make space in capital city Malé as it needs plenty of space to carry out the “Veshifahi Malé” program.

Speaking to press on Sunday, Aslam revealed that work is proceeding swiftly in the project in cooperation with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Stating that the project requires a lot of space, Aslam revealed that they are facing a few difficulties in making room.

“Space can only be made once those living in difficult and cramped situations are provided bigger homes. As such, this project is linked to housing schemes”

The ministry is yet to detail the progress of the project.

The program was initiated under the government’s Agenda 19 action plan to provide housing, specialized for those who do not have homes or registered plots of land in the capital city.

The minister further stated that the reason for the delay in commencing some of the government is schemes is "due to lack of funds."

As such, Aslam said that the funds budgeted are "nor enough" for the number of schemes that have been included.

However, the government aims to begin every single scheme the government has allocated, and the ministry will do its best to carry them out, said Aslam.

Highlighting that the government has initiated 36 schemes worth MVR 1.1 billion so far this year, Aslam added that 71 more are in the tender process. Four of them include development of four harbors, 14 road development projects, 26 water and sewerage system projects and 27 projects for building breakwaters.
