Speaker Mohamed Nasheed met with foreign consultant Johann Kriegler on Tuesday at the parliament building.
Kriegler, a retired South African justice, was appointed as a consultant by the Attorney General’s office in May to conduct an assessment of the Maldives judiciary.
He is to study the current judicial structure, review its policies and conduct an independent assessment of the judiciary, as part of the government’s efforts to reform the judiciary.
His final report will be submitted to the Attorney General’s Office on August 29.
Kriegler served at the Transvaal Provincial Division of South Africa’s Supreme Court in 1984 and in the the Appellate Division between 1990 and 1993, which was then the highest court in the country. He was permanently appointed to its bench in 1993, and in the following year was appointed a founding justice of the newly formed Constitutional Court of South Africa and completed his term of office in 2002.
