Jihan voted into oversight committee, Shifau to clemency board

Parliament has voted Hinnavaru MP Jeehan Mahmood into the oversight committee to combat human trafficking in the Maldives.

All the 81 MPs present at Monday’s sitting voted in favor of Jeehan.

She will replace former Gadhdhoo MP Ahmed Rasheed at the oversight committee, which was formed under the Anti-Human Trafficking Act by President Abdulla Yameen in December 2013.

The committee includes 14 members from various fields, including one from the parliament.

In addition, Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Shifau has been elected into the clemency board.

81 MPs voted in favor of Shifau's appointment as well.

MP Shifau will be replacing former Thulusdhoo MP Ibrahim Waheed at the clemency board, which is tasked with advising the President on giving leniency to convicts.

The 11-member board consists of an MP, a member elected by civil societies, a member of the parole board, a police officer, a member of the judiciary, and experts in the legal, social, education, and health sectors.
