1,190 chikungunya cases have been reported so far this year, states the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

HPA stated that reported cases of chikungunya have increased in January and June compared to the same time period in the last three years.

Most of the chikungunya cases were reported in Raa and Gaafu Alif atolls and Male’, HPA stated, adding that 2,411 cases of dengue have also been reported this year.

However, reported cases decreased from April to May, HPA added.

Most of the dengue cases in May and June were reported in the atolls Haa Dhaalu, Raa, and Dhaalu.

Late last month, two children stricken with chikungunya had to be admitted to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital after they became seriously ill after the infection spread to their brains.
