Ungoofaaru Council to cover electricity costs this Ramadan
The Council will be covering electricity costs from May 6th to the end of June

The local government council of Ungoofaaru island in Raa Atoll has decided to cover electricity expenses for households in their jurisdiction for the upcoming month.

The month falls on Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, and the decision to cover electricity costs follow a decision from a Council committee.

The Council will be covering electricity costs from May 6th to the end of June; the practice has become convention as the Council covered Ungoofaaru’s electricity costs for Ramadan in 2016 and 2017 as well.

Ungoofaaru has said that they will announce any changes in the prices of power, given a government reform agenda currently in place, and has advised residents to ‘carefully manage’ their use of power.

Similar initiatives have been taken by other island councils, such as the one in Ihavandhoo island which provided MVR 500 for each household and Bodufulhadhoo island which covered a percentage of all electricity bills for the month of Ramadan in 2016.
