MDP meeting 'Veshi Fahi' applicants

MDP said in a statement that its members have been invited to an event on Wednesday

Government coalition's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is meeting with applicants for the Veshi Malé housing project, inaugrated by former president Mohamed Waheed in 2012.

The controversial project has left several applicants who met the criteria and were allocated high points in the government's own review, without one of the flats built by India's TATA Housing, with which the government renewed its contract last year.

MDP said in a statement that its members have been invited to an event on Wednesday to discuss the matter. The party's general-secretary Afshan Latheef also refuted reports that MDP promises immediate compensatensation, noting that the meeting is a forum for individuals to express their case.

The project was developed during the tenure of former president Mohamed Nasheed, MDP leader's leader, and a minister of the ousted government of President Abdulla Yameen, in responding to the controversy regarding the project has said that Nasheed's administration is to blame for its failures, as they had 'approved the design'.

Housing projects run by the previous government have been marred with allegations of unfair processes and corruption. Several applicants who scored high in review have been omitted from the list of flat recipients.
