Eight migrant workers arrested for brewing alcohol

The arrested are of the ages 21 to 33

Eight Bangladeshi nationals were arrested last week for reportedly brewing alcohol in a home in capital city Malé.

The Maldives Police Service says that the eight men were arrested in an operation carried out after a tip-off that they have been brewing and selling alcohol in the capital.

Officers found over 800 bottles of illicitly brown moonshine, as well six five litre bottles of moonshine, and 14 tupperware containing moonshine.

The arrested are between the ages of 21 to 33.

Alcohol is strictly prohibited in all inhabited islands across the country, and is controlled to tourist resorts and cruise safaris; alcohol offences carry a prison sentence and a fine.
