Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the new Ambassador of Portugal to the Maldives, Jose’ De Pinho Pereira have shared mutual hope that both countries can begin a new chapter in cooperation on a number of avenues.
This was reiterated during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Monday afternoon in which the New Portuguese Ambassador presented his Letter of Credence to the Maldives President.
During discussions held after the brief ceremony, both the President and Ambassador had acknowledged the encounter between both countries in the history, many centuries ago. The Maldives was under Portuguese colonial rule from 1558 – 1573.
They however emphasized that that the future is what holds more importance.
As such, they expressed hope that Maldives and Portugal can begin a new chapter in cooperation on avenues such as sports, economic development and renewable energy.
Welcoming the new Ambassador to the Maldives, President Solih expressed hope that the beginning of his term will herald the reinvigoration of positive ties between both countries.
Ambassador Pereira expressed his hope that the bond between both countries will further strengthen during his ambassadorial tenure.
