Supreme Court halts order to transfer Adeeb to house arrest

The Supreme Court has nullified the High Court’s order to transfer former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to house arrest.

In the ruling issued on Tuesday, Supreme Court ordered to halt Adeeb's transfer until it reaches a decision in the appeal filed by the state.

Adeeb was transferred to house arrest on Monday night after the High Court concluded that the state failed to provide a compelling reason to keep him in prison despite his ill health.

The High Court is currently proceeding with Adeeb’s appeal regarding his request to be sent abroad for medical treatment. The Civil Court rejected his request on the grounds that he had failed to fulfill the required procedures.

The High Court ordered authorities to keep him under house arrest until it gives a verdict on the appeal case.

At the last appeal hearing, Adeeb’s lawyer requested the court to transfer him home, as recommended by doctors, until the end of the trial, since his health has deteriorated to the point that it is now threatening his life. He also asked the High Court to nullify the Civil Court’s verdict and order authorities to allow him to travel abroad for treatment.

The High Court will next schedule the verdict hearing.
