An aquatic snake has been found in the lagoon of Makunudhoo island in northern Haa Dhaal atoll.

A group of island residents were fishing out in the island’s lagoon when they saw the snake, who then captured it.

While the photographs are unclear, RaajjeMV has been informed that the snake is ‘venomous’, although it is now being kept in isolation.

A team from the Maldives Police Service has been called to the island.

Coral reef snake sightings are rare in the Maldives, although sea kraits live in warm coastal areas. The non-venomous and essentially harmless banded eel, spotted commonly by locals, is often mistaken for kraits.
