The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing regarding Progressive Party of Maldives' (PPM) request to dismiss a Civil Court case asking that the party’s leadership be returned to former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
The Supreme Court’s full bench is handling the case and a hearing has been scheduled for Thursday at 10:15am.
During the previous administration, heated disagreements between Maumoon and then president Abdulla Yameen led to Maumoon being removed from the party.
The Civil Court has accepted its own case and held a preliminary hearing on Monday. Lawyer and PPM member Ali Ahmed filed the case, claiming that Abdulla Yameen had lost his senior position in the party after he lost the presidency.
He asked the court to return the party to Maumoon, who was appointed PPM president at the party’s first congress.
