Some state officials have conflicts of interest: Transparency

Some state officials have conflicts of interest, says Aiman Rasheed, the communications director of Transparency Maldives.

Speaking to RaajjeTV, Aiman said publicizing the financial statements of members of the government’s executive branch was an important step towards eliminating corruption.

However, he said that it was concerning to see ‘corrupt’ officials of the previous administration still holding senior positions in the new government.

He highlighted that the previous administration had used the state for its own personal benefit and that there has still not been any effort to prevent this from happening again.

Aiman acknowledged that there have been steps in the right direction, such as publicizing the financial statements and proposing the whistleblower protection bill.

He expressed hope that the new government will make the necessary reformations to stop abuses similar to that seen during the previous administration.
