Authorities to introduce taxi meters
 
This comes at a time locals have expressed concerns regarding unfair taxi fares over the bridge
 
A fare will be allocated in an efficient way for both drivers and locals
 
Transport Authority yet to announce meter fares and a date to enforce it

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced decision to introduces taxi meters in the capital city Male.

At a press conference held by the Ministry on Thursday, Minister Aishath Nahula stated that they had reached the decision to introduce the service to Maldives upon the request of citizens.

Highlighting that the current administration will reach decisions on the opinions and needs of the people, Minister Nahula stated that they had decided to introduce metered taxis after detailed discussions.

This comes after many locals had at the forum held at Dharubaaruge on the 08th of January, requested the authorities to establish taxi meters. The forum in question, was held to hear concerns from both taxi drivers and the public over the taxi fares being taken from centers for bridge travels.

Minister Nahula further stated that although meters will be established, fares will not exceed over the amount that is currently being taken for travels throughout the capital city Male’. A fare will be decided in a way that will benefit both drivers and customers.

“We will not bring these changes in a way that will benefit a particular party. It will be beneficial to both drivers and customers” said the Minister.

With the announcement, authorities are yet to announce a date set to begin operating metered taxis and the regulations under which metered taxis will be operated. However, the Ministry has stated that they will assemble a timeline for the procedure in the near future.
