Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is to enforce wearing helmets while crossing the Sinamale Bridge, from March onwards.

At a press conference held on Thursday, Transport Minister Aishath Nahula stated that it will be made compulsory to wear helmets while crossing the bridge from the 10th of March onwards.

Highlighting that this step is being taken as a safety measure to reduce the exceeding accidents over the bridge since it was inaugurated, Minister Nahula went on to caution that legal measures will be taken against those who do not abide by it.

“This is the solution we think will bring an end to the many accidents over the bridge that are causing fatal head injuries” said Minister Nahula.

Ever since the inauguration of Sinamale Bridge, connecting the capital city to Hulhule’ island, there has been a hike in accidents causing risky injuries that have required serious treatment from hospitals. While the speed limit on the highway linking Hulhule’ to Hulhumale is 50 kilometers an hour, Maldives Police Service has been advising riders to abide by road safety regulations.
