The Ministry of Home Affairs has expressed concern over the statement released by the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) regarding the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS)’s decision to transfer former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb back to prison.
HRCM on Tuesday released a statement, saying that MCS’s decision to transfer the ex-VP back to prison is against the doctor’s recommendation.
The commission went on to stress that although the doctor had recommended him to be kept in a “homely environment” for two months, MCS had not abided by it.
HRCM in it’s statement highlighted that a urology specialist recommended Adeeb be transferred to house arrest for six to eight weeks while he is being treated. HRCM also stated that the MCS is required to follow doctor’s recommendation when dealing with convicts as stated under the Prisons and Parole Act.
Emphasizing that there are a few worrying points in the statement, State Minister at the Home Ministry, Ali Nazeer stated that they will look into the concerns and enlighten the commission with further details.
Under the doctor’s recommendation, Adeeb was transferred to house arrest on the 27th of November 2018 and corrections officers had taken him back to Maafushi Prison on the 02nd of January.
Adeeb’s has since been admitted at the hospital for treatment following a sudden health deterioration.
