Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb is being held at the special protection unit, reveals Maldives Correctional Service.
An official from MCS told RaajjeMV that the Adeeb is being kept in a specialized cell in which current Home Minister Imran Abdulla and coalition leader former President Mohamed Nasheed had served their prison sentences in during former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration. The cell in question comes with facilities and services that are not provided to standard convicts in regular cells.
This comes while the former VP’s family has asserted that he was kept in a regular cell during the former administration where his rights were neglected and abused.
Adeeb, who was serving a 33-year-long prison sentence was transferred to house arrest following a surgery after which the doctor recommended, he be kept in a “homely environment” until conclusion of his treatment. He was treated at IGM Hospital in November due to a health deterioration following which he underwent a surgery to dissolve stones in his ureter.
He was taken back to prison on 2nd January, after 36 days under house arrest.

Following the transfer, deemed to be influenced under wrong documentation, Adeeb’s new political party Maldives Third Way Democrats (MTD) had expressed concern, having stated that a just trial needs to be carried out in his case. The appeal has since been backed by several supporters of MTD and the former VP.
In a tweet on Thursday morning, Minister Imran wrote that doctors had recommended to keep him in a “homely environment” from 24th October to 24th December. Although Adeeb has been taken back to prison, Minister Imran stated that authorities will manage his medical care as prescribed, going on to say that no one’s rights will be neglected by the government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
