Maldives National Defence Force has revealed that contractors are installing electrical wiring at buildings that are not up to the standard set by State Electric Company (STELCO).
At a press conference on Monday, Colonel Abdulla Zuhuree said that their investigation with STELCO into the rise of electrical malfunctions has revealed that low quality wiring was a significant cause of fire incidents.
While the energy authority has approved 5,000 people to do wiring work, Colonel Zuhuree said contractors hire expatriates who do not have the necessary experience to install wirings at construction sites.
The Colonel said STELCO and the fire and rescue service will begin period compliance checks starting January.
