President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to relocate Kalhuvakaru Mosque to Sultan Park again.

The President made this decision upon the cabinet’s recommendation after a meeting on Tuesday, as part of his pledges for the first 100 days in office.

Earlier, experts from the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage assessed the area to relocate the historic mosque and gathered information on the public and professional opinions regarding the matter.

At Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, members agreed that Kalhuvakaru Mosque shall be relocated to Sultan Park area it will be well-monitored and portray the Maldivian historical legacy. The members also agreed to allow the mosque to be used to perform prayers and act as a public attraction.

Kalhuvakaru Mosque is a unique historic landmark built with coral stones that showcases traditional design work.

The Mosque was built in 1789 during the rule of Sultan Hassan Nooradeen Iskandhar. It stood on a coral foundation carved with intricate designs and was held up by wooden beams engraved with Arabic calligraphy.

In 2016, former President Abdulla Yameen’s government had dismantled the mosque to make way for renovations at Sultan Park, and the parts have been in storage since.
