Senior members of ruling MDP to contest in parliamentary election
MDP Primary will be held on the 18th of January
The ruling party will be announcing constituencies they will be vying for on Friday
Parliamentary Election will be held in March 2019

Senior members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have announced that they will be contesting in the parliamentary election.

Five senior members of the ruling party have announced that they will be vying for seats in the 19th parliament. They are:

  • Anas Abdul Sattar, MDP’s secretary general,
  • Hassan Latheef, the party's chairperson,
  • Ali Niyaz, campaign committee chairperson,
  • Ahmed Abdulla, financial deputy chair, and
  • Hisaan Hussain, legal director.

On Saturday, secretary general Sattar announced his decision to run for the mid-Maafannu constituency.

Last Tuesday, chairperson Latheef announced his decision to run for the west-Henveiru constituency seat and asked for volunteers to join his campaign.

RaajjeMV understands that lawyer Hisaan will be running for Thulhaadhoo constituency. On November 4, Hisaan took to twitter expressing her hope that Thulhaadhoo constituents will give her the opportunity to represent them in Parliament in order to support the reform efforts.

Niyaz, who will be running for a seat in Hulhumale’ constituency, announced his resignation from his post in MDP via twitter on Friday.

Lastly, Ahmed Abdulla will be vying for Baarah constituency and has begun his campaign.

MDP’s primary election has been scheduled for the 18th of January. Those who submit their application for membership before the 7th of December may cast their votes at the party primary. Those who wish to contest in the primary may submit their bids before 19th of December, with the required 200 signatures from eligible voters in the constituency they are contesting in.

The current Parliament consists of 85 seats for 85 constituencies, with 12 seats representing the capital. The current members had taken their oath on the 28th of May 2014 and their five-year term ends in 2019.
