Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the Maldives for President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s inauguration.
While this is the first time PM Modi is visiting the Maldives since his inauguration in 2014, outgoing President Abdulla Yameen’s government had invited the Indian PM on multiple occasions, which he had cancelled.
Modi had skipped Maldives during his tour of the Indian Ocean in 2015 following the political turmoil in the country. He was scheduled to visit Maldives in March 2015.
Although Modi had abstained from visiting Maldives back then, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had visited Maldives in October 2015.
India has been continuously calling for reform throughout the past five years whenever the country plummeted into political turmoil. The past tenure has also seen a souring of ties between the Maldives and India, following Yameen’s close affiliation with the Chinese Government.
While an Indian Prime Minister last visited Maldives in 2011, the neighboring country maintained close, brotherly relations with the Maldives during former Presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.
Over 200 foreign dignitaries, 12,000 members of the public, and all the former Maldives presidents have been invited to Solih’s inauguration ceremony at the national stadium on Saturday evening. However, the outgoing president has declined the invitation. It is planned to be the largest inauguration held in Maldives’ history.
